St Mary Romanian Orthodox Church was founded on July 15, 1911. In 1914 the Church purchased the first properties which consisted of two houses located at 1339-1345 W Webster Avenue, in Chicago. One of them was transformed into a Church and the other served as a Parish Hall. In December of the same year, after a fire who destroyed part of the houses, a decision to build a new Church was made. The new Church building was consecrated on May 1915. In 1920, the Church of St Mary buys the property at 2213 N Clyburn which was named “Coliba”, who served as the Parish Hall. In 1961 the building of the actual Church started on the lots at 4225 N Central Avenue, Church being consecrated on August 11, 1963. In 1976 the Parish hall was built and consecrated on November 7, 1976. Since then on the first weekend of November the anniversary of St Mary Romanian Orthodox Church of Chicago is celebrated. |
